About The Tzadik:
Maran Harav Ovadia Yosef (Hebrew: עובדיה יוסף) was born on September 24, 1920, in Baghdad, Iraq (Hebrew date: י"ב בתשרי ה'תרפ"א). His family moved to Jerusalem when he was four. Financial hardship meant that he worked from a young age, while his passion and skill for Torah study marked him as a diligent scholar.
He became Chief Rabbi of the State of Israel and the spiritual leader of Shas. Respected within Mizrahi and Haredi communities, he devoted his life to Torah study and service to Sephardic Jewry. He consulted with presidents, prime ministers, and other world leaders while remaining attentive to his community.
His writings include Halikhot Olam, a commentary on the Ben Ish Hai, and the detailed responsa collections Yechaveh Da’at and Yabia Omer. He wrote responsa on Shabbat and other topics, as well as works including Maor Israel and Anaf Etz Avot, with commentary on Pirkei Avot. His sons Yitzhak and David Yosef continued publishing commentary on his work.
His influential rabbinical writings earned him the Israel Prize for Rabbinical Literature in 1970.
He played a role in peace negotiations in the Arab-Israeli conflict in 1990, supported the left-center Labour Party, and permitted Shas to join successive Israeli governments. His political influence also contributed to the election of his long-time friend Shimon Peres as Israel’s president in 2007.
Remembered for his strength of character, scholarship, and service to his community, Maran passed away in Jerusalem on October 7, 2013, at the age of 93 (Hebrew date: ג' בחשוון ה'תשע"ד).
